AMTRAK CHAIRMAN JOINS HALL OF FAME BOARD

Tom Carper

The Chairman of Amtrak's Board of Directors has joined the Board of the National Railroad Hall of Fame. Tom Carper, western Illinois native and former Mayor of Macomb, was elected as an ex officio director at the Hall of Fame's annual meeting in January.

Hall of Fame Chairman Jay Matson said he was delighted Carper had joined the board. "Amtrak is an economic driver for Galesburg and west central Illinois and will be a marketing partner for the Hall of Fame. Tom's expertise as an economic development official and Amtrak Director makes him a valuable asset to the project."

Carper was appointed to the Amtrak Board of Directors by President George W. Bush in March 2008 and received confirmation from the

U.S. senate to serve a five year term. In January 2009, he was elected Board Chair.

Carper came to the Amtrak Board from his position as Regional Manager of Opportunity Returns with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, a position he held since 2003. Prior to working for the State of Illinois, Carper held the post of Mayor of Macomb, Illinois, from April 1991 to April 2003. He was a small business operator for 20 years and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Carper is a graduate of Western Illinois University.
